Our History

Salcantay school was founded in 1987 as an initiative of a group of parents who wanted a solid education for their daughters. An education focused on personal attention, respect for freedom and the promotion of responsibility, in addition to a Christian sense of life. The Centro de Orientación Familiar (COFAM – Center for Family Guidance) made this initiative possible.

It was Saint John Paul II who named the image of Our Lady, who chairs the school chapel, as “Virgen Joven” (Young Blessed Virgin) in May 1988. From that trip we keep, with special fondness, the cushion on which the Holy Father knelt to pray before the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the monstrance. Since then, the girls who receive the First Communion kneel on that same cushion.

In 2000, Salcantay moved its venue to Calle Pío XII in the district of Surco.

On October 6, 2002 a large Group of students and parents from Salcantay school traveled to Rome to attend the canonization of Saint Josemaría Escrivá.

On July 16, 2010, after fourteen years, the school received with great enthusiasm Monsignor Javier Echevarría. His visit caused great expectation and joy among students and teachers. We keep special memory of his words inviting students to imitate the Young Blessed Virgin of Salcantay.

Human institutions live and become effective due to the work of those who are part of them. In Salcantay, we keep alive and active energy sources that made its existence possible, and which guided our work from the beginning: Saint Josemaría Escrivá, to whom we owe the spirit that was imprinted on the institution; Monsignor Álvaro del Portillo, his first successor, who promoted the school’s startup; and the ongoing encouragement of the current Prelate of Opus Dei, Monsignor Javier Echevarría.
